The original Pipehorn was invented and patented in 1968 by Tom Humphrys, an engineer at the Alabama Gas Company, to address the issue of locating cast-iron pipes. His invention was the first to utilize ultra-high frequency technology and the first to implement a pitch change to indicate signal strength, resulting in greater accuracy. He truly built a "better mousetrap" for locating. Tom was involved with Utility Tool Company from almost the beginning, as they collaborated to develop other products during the early years of Pipehorn.
From this legacy, Utility Tool Company has developed, manufactured, sold, and supported Pipehorn equipment for over five decades.
